Over 1,000 different fish species and 300 different coral types may be found in the seas surrounding Seychelles. In addition to being home to the highly endangered Hawksbill and Green Turtles, the islands are frequented by enormous Whale Sharks and Manta Rays.

Due to its remote location 400km south-west of Mahé, the main island of Seychelles, the seas around the coral island of Alphonse are alive with a diversity of marine species that are difficult to locate near any other inhabited island in Seychelles. Warm, crystal-clear water, coral that hasn't been disturbed, excellent visibility, and a wide variety of fish species have come to be associated with both Alphonse and St. François because of the area's rich currents and sea life.

Over 1,000 different fish species and 300 different coral types may be found in the seas surrounding Seychelles. In addition to being home to the highly endangered Hawksbill and Green Turtles, the islands are frequented by enormous Whale Sharks and Manta Rays. Seychelles is a well-known diving destination because of its warm tropical seas and fish-filled coral reefs.

There are several marine fish species found exclusively in Seychelles. Here are a few fish species that are well-liked by visitors travelling to the area.

Triggerfish

The Mustache Triggerfish is probably more likely to be found near or in the lagoon's surf zone. They may weigh up to 12 pounds and have a distinctive upper lip feature of a little black moustache. They might be pinkish-orange or predominantly yellow with black stripes, depending on the species.

Bumphead Parrotfish

Another famous fish in the area is the bumping parrotfish. It has an odd appearance, with a big forehead hump and a mouth that resembles a parrot. They are photogenic fish because parrotfish frequently have exquisitely coloured scales. A substantial amount of muscle will be needed to land one because adult parrotfish can weigh up to 100 pounds.

Wrasse

The Humphead wrasse is a large coral reef fish that may grow over six feet long. It gets its name from the noticeable protrusion on its forehead. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has designated the species that can live to be beyond 30 years old as being endangered (IUCN). Wrasse, which has elaborate patterns and unusual blue, purple, and green colouration that resembles a bump-headed parrotfish, are among the most stunning fish in the area.

Barracuda

Seychelles' nearby predators that do the greatest damage may be the barracuda. These carnivorous fish, which resemble crocodiles, frequently reach lengths of 5 to 6 feet. They are long fish with a silver tint and a pattern on their flanks that is dark grey. Their large lips, enormous teeth, and extremely nasty personalities are their most distinguishing features. You won't see these fish until they strike since they have the ability to sit quite calm in the water.
